the story behind

Vermentino was the first alternative grape variety planted by Ricca Terra Farms. It is a fantastic variety for a region like the Riverland. It has an ability to withstand extreme heat and maintain fruit acidity, essential for making quality white wines. All the Vermentino planted at Ricca Terra Farms is hand pruned and established on a single cordon wire, unlike other Vermentino vineyards grown by other growers in Riverland which are established on traditional two wire cordon systems (two wire cordon systems tend to lead to higher cropping levels).

Two sets of foliage wires are employed in all the Vermentino found at Ricca Terra Farms. This provides the growing foliage with support and allows for the development of a canopy that protects the grapes from summer heat. This type of trellis system ensures the flavours of the grapes are preserved close to harvest and allows our winemakers to make amazing wines.
